Prospective Students

Photos from Past Department Events

Welcome Class of 2013!
The department threw a pizza party for the undergraduates, graduates and faculty of the civil engineering department to welcome prospective freshmen civil engineering majors.

Below are slideshows from past department events or JHU Civil Engineering sponsored events for the community since 2008. Get a look at various aspects of student life, department ceremonies and competitions by clicking on the individual slide shows below. If you wish to browse photos, click here.

Engineering Innovation "What is Earthquake Engineering?" Demonstration
On July 21, 2009, Professor Narutoshi Nakata gave a lecture and a demonstration for students in the Engineering Innovation program at Johns Hopkins University.

2009 Blue Hat Celebration
On April 28th, 2009, members of the class of 2009 were recognized, along with graduate students projected to receive degrees this semester, in the Annual Blue Hat Ceremony. It has become a tradition at the Civil Engineering Department to award graduating students personalized blue hard hats.

Renovations at Gilman Hall

On March 26, 2009 several civil engineering students involved with the ASCE (American Society of Civil Engineers) JHU chapter took at tour of Gilman Hall, the iconic clock tower at Johns Hopkins University. Renovations are expected to last for another year, as certain critical elements must be completely reconstructed.

Maryland Wood Bridge Competition 2009

On February 6, 2009 the Civil Engineering Department at Johns Hopkins University sponsored the Maryland Wood Bridge Competition 2009. High school competitors designed bridges using only balsa wood and glue, which then were judged based on architectural excellence, efficiency, and popularity of design.

The Latrobe Bowl 2009

In February of 2009, Civil Engineers faced off against the Mechanical Engineers in the second annual Latrobe Bowl flag football game. The Civil Engineeing team dominated the game, winning 28-7 on a frigid February day and establishing dominance of Latrobe Hall. Engineers Week - Tower of Power 2009

The Tower of Power in a Half-Hour was an undergraduate competition to build the tallest tower out of only pasta and marshmallows in 30 minutes. It was sponsored by the Whiting School of Engineering during Engineering Week in February 2009. The Alumni team (comprised of several types of engineers) destroyed the competition, constructing a prism tower over 6.5 feet high!

Civil Engineering Welcome Party for Class of 2012

The Civil Engineering Department throws several outdoor cookout events per year where undergrads, graduates, and faculty can relax and socialize. In September of every year a cookout welcomes the incoming freshman class.

Soil Mechanics Labratory

September 2008: Students in Professor Anandarajah's soil mechanics class perform tests on soil samples during lab time. Students learn about failure mechanisms in soil, liquefaction underneath buildings during earthquakes, and even model seepage under mock dams using the facilities.

Department Summer Barbeque

Summers are a time of work and play for the Civil Engineering Department. Undergraduates frequently find research, independent study or internships around the Baltimore area, and occasionally meet up with graduates and professors for cookouts.

Blue Hat Celebration for Class of 2008

Congratulations to the Class of 2008! In May 2008 they recieved their blue hard hats from the faculty of JHU Civil Engineering, to mark their transition from the undergraduate program.

Maryland Wood Bridge 2008

Thanks to all our volunteers for making the Maryland Wood Bridge Challenge another great success! We cranked through about 50 bass wood bridges and 1 coffee stirrer bridge without any problems. The state winner had an efficiency of over 2700, the lightest bridge was 1.7 grams and the highest load carried was 107 lbs. We saw several stiff beam bridges this year, one of which exploded and actually hit the ceiling, much to the delight of the crowd. The contestants had loads of fun and hopefully learned a bit too. Everyone, including students, parents and judges, were very appreciative of your time, efforts and willingness to help and made this clear during and after the awards ceremony. Hopkins Civil Engineering was very well represented!

Tower of Power in a Half-Hour

The Tower of Power in a Half-Hour was an undergraduate competition to build the tallest tower out of only pasta and marshmallows in 30 minutes. It was sponsored by the Whiting School of Engineering during Engineering Week in Spring 2008. In a narrow and disputed upset, the mechanical engineers built a tower 5ft, 1/4 inches tall, beating the civil engineers by a mere 1/4 inch.

Paper Column Contest 2007

Back by popular demand, the Paper Column Contest was held on December 4, 2007. The contest was open to all graduate students, undergraduates and our high school researchers and visitors. Contestants were allowed to design a column using no more than 6 sheets of copy machine paper, and scotch tape around the perimeter and two ends of the completed cross section. Congratulations to Luiz Vieira, the Brazilian Baker, paper column champion of JHU. Luiz's column carried 176.7 lbs - yes, that's one ounce of paper, standing 11 inches tall, carrying 176.7 lbs.

Breaking waves on a beach numerically modeled by Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics. The mechanisms of wave breaking, the resulting surf zone turbulence, and sediment transport, are studied by Professor Dalrymple and his students in the Coastal/Ocean Program.
