Prospective Students

Welcome Prospective Undergraduates!

Several Civil Engineering Students on a Tour of Gilman Hall Renovation in 2009.

Civil Engineering is an established professional discipline that is tied more to our society than any engineering disciplines. We are responsible for the design, construction, and maintenance of civil infrastructure, including bridges, buildings, dams, tunnels, highways, railways, airports, foundations, water resources, coastal facilities, power plants, etc. Today, because of the social, economical, and environmental needs, civil engineers work on more cross-disciplinary projects than ever before.

The undergraduate curriculum is, therefore, broad enough to include opportunities for elective courses both within and outside of the department. Courses offered by the Department of Geography and Environmental Engineering are particularly noteworthy; these include programs in water supply and water quality, as well as studies in economics and systems analysis.

The Department of Civil Engineering at Johns Hopkins University offers B.S. and concurrent B.S./M.S. programs for undergraduate students, and M.S.E., M.C.E., and Ph.D. programs for graduate students. With 10 primary faculty and an average of 15 students per class both at undergraduate and graduate levels, students will find themselves in small, but close community where they can work with colleagues and professors in a collaborative research and educational environment.

Faces of JHU Civil Engineering
The Department of Civil Engineering has a small and talented group of undergraduates who excel in both civil engineering related activities and lead other interesting organizations on campus. Read their stories here.

The Research Pages
World-class professors mentor undergraduates and graduates through independent study and research in their fields of expertise. At Hopkins Civil Engineering there are four major areas of research.

Structural Art around Baltimore
Baltimore CE Students at Hopkins have put together a guide to the structural art of Baltimore. Learn more about the differences between structural art and architecture.

Engineering Innovation
Are you a rising high school junior, senior, or recent graduate and want to earn college credit over the summer? Civil Engineering is one major focus area in the Engineering Innovation program.

“Civil Engineering at Hopkins has made me into an extremely hard and efficient worker.  Hopkins also has made me into a good problem solver, which is something that Lehman Brothers has been pleased with.”
