Undergraduate Open House
The Department of Civil Engineering actively participates in the university-wide Open House. Faculty members will provide an overview of the department, program information, curriculum, student life, research focus, fellowship and scholarship opportunities. There also will be question and answer periods.
This year’s Open Houses are scheduled on
Saturday, October 17, 2009
Saturday, October 24, 2009
To attend Open House, Registration is required. Please visit the Office of Undergraduate Admission’s Open House web page.
Parents may also find some valuable information about campus visits at the Johns Hopkins Parents Association.

Hybrid Simulation Combining Experimental and Analytical Substructures
Using hybrid models (combination of experimental and analytical substructures), critical structural components can be experimentally investigated at systems-level. Professor Nakata’s research group is using hybrid simulation technique for the seismic assessment of large and complex structural systems.
Lindsey Smith
Graduate Student at IGERT
“Composite materials have been designed somewhat by trial and error. Designers have an intuitive sense of how to arrange fibers in a matrix to make the material as strong as possible. At the civil engineering department at JHU, Professor Guest's lab is coming up with computational algorithms for determining exactly where those fibers should be. These algorithms would determine the structure at the microscale to make a material mathematically optimal for a desired performance property, such as stiffness or conductivity.”
